Question Is this possible with Nameserver Change?

Hi

On Tuesday I copied a site cathytowers from Webhost Vexxhost to Omnis and changed Nameservers with my Registrar.

I left a working site at the old host so that when nameservers change there should be no interruption to serivce.

When I access this site from my computer (Dell running XP) using a browser (FF) or a Route Tracer like PingPlotter or VisualRoute 2009 I get the OLD host Vexxhost but whois shows nameservers at the new host Omnis.

I got two friends to check and they see the site at the NEW host Omnis.
(Omnis copy has Images of a hand and pebbles while Vexxhost copy has images of a feather and pebbles.)

So can anyone help me understand why my computer will only access the old host and how to correct this?

I have cleared the download data from the browser and used a new different browser Google Chrome but that help.

Thanks in advance

Re: Is this possible with Nameserver Change?

I see the hand.

DNS Cache is most likely the cause as DNS does take its sweet time to resolve dependent upon several things. With Tiscali the DNS cache is beyond your browser thus it's not much help in wiping the cache locally etc.

Someone like OpenDNS have far quicker refresh rates.

Nonetheless, after a couple of days even Tiscali will have caught up.

Thumbs up Re: Is this possible with Nameserver Change?

Hi Kim

Thanks for the reply. I did some research in the net and found this article which has done the trick.

Configuring the DNS Resolver Cache in Windows XP

Quote:
Windows XP comes with a useful command-line utility ipconfig (discussed here) that has a switch, flushdns, for removing the entries in the cache.

Open a command prompt and enter ipconfig /flushdns and the cache will emptied.

Personally, I find that it sometimes speeds up Internet browsing to do this flush even when there are no obvious error messages.

If you are curious about the contents of the DNS cache, they can also be seen by using ipconfig. In this case open a command prompt and enter ipconfig /displaydns

If you are experiencing trouble connecting to a particular Web site, it may be useful to see if its URL is in the cache and what IP is being used.
I am now "flushed with success" thanks to Kim for pointing me in the right direction.

Re: Is this possible with Nameserver Change?

Ah well I thought it was too easy, back to square one.

Despite clearing the ipconfig cache and having a short period where I was accessing the site correctly I am not back to only being able to access the old site.

I don't know if being on f2s is different from Tiscali or just how slow they are to update their cache but I'm stumped.

Re: Is this possible with Nameserver Change?

I can confirm that I'm still seeing the new one and a dig on the listed whois nameservers shows that both are sending back the correct info.

Check you don't have a hostsfile in play on your PC causing this, or alternatively change your DNS servers to 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220 on your PC or router so you're using OpenDNS instead of the Tiscali set to see if this helps.

Re: Is this possible with Nameserver Change?

Hi Kim

I didn't have a host file in play so I changed to open DNS and initially that didn't work either. )I changed the DNS address in the router).

I did more digging on the internet and guessed I might need to change the LAN network connection as well so I did, rebooted the pc and fingers crossed is now sorted.

Incidentally just for interest sake. When I moved this site, I did two others at the same time. All three exactly the same from one host to another, yet two of them connected to the new host within 24 hours and have connected each time perfectly as have all the previous moves I have made, but this on this time has caused so much trouble.

Anyway, I am most grateful to you for your time and help. Thank you again.

Dave
