Smile cannot find my ftp folder on webspace

I have a website that i havent even visited for a couple of years...
i can access it via the www.rupertbear.f2s.com
but i cannot access the ftp files..
I only ever used to manually dump my files on the web using explorer so i can automatically remember the exact web address of the files.
i realise that f2s recently changed the addresses. i have read every single help file on f2s. and tried to use the information to put together an address to access the files. An example of a complete address might just make it click for me.
old address was.
ftp://ftp.rupertbear.f2s.com/www.rup...elan_se_turbo/

what would be the new address.
Thanks

The new address you would use in Windows explorer would be ftp://ftp.rupertbear.f2s.com/public_html/ . That will take you to the root of your website where you'd put your index.html to have as your front page.

It's different to your old address because the "www.rupertbear.f2s.com" folder no longer exists on the new Linux hosting platform, and instead all your website files are in a folder called "public_html".

So surely clicking on that link should take me to somewhere.

the front door of my webspace......where you put in your user name and password..........theres nothing there.

and most of the website is dead now...from that www.rupertbear.f2s.com
Something is odd because if i access the main site and find it on google i get http://www.rupertbear.f2s.com/LOTUS_...URBO/index.htm and all the site is still up there somewhere.and appears to be working fine. i must have accidently created two index pages. doh.
still trying to find my ftp file ..

This aint rocket science.

This aint exactly rocket science. Its only a folder somewhere on a computer but without the exact address like finding a needle in a haystack.
theres something silly going on staring me in the face. just cant see it.
The files have to be there because the site works perfectly from the googled address.

What actually happens when you open that link in Windows Explorer? Do you get an error? If it's working it should show a file called index.htm (and other files/folders).

Also are you entering your username and password right? The new username format is username@username.f2s.com, so for you your username would be rupertbear@rupertbear.f2s.com

Edit: You don't need to know the exact address. You just need to login to the FTP server with the correct username and password. The "address" that you give Windows Explorer just tells it to connect to the FTP server, and when it realises you need to login to the FTP server it asks you for the login details. Once you've logged in you can browse the folders and find where things are.

If you're in windows explorer, you'll need to select File, then Login As to get the username/password prompt.

f2s don't allow anonymous ftp browsing, so you'll need to login before you can see any files. This is for security reasons, like if you wanted to keep some files out of public view.

previously i would type in the file address i would know i have arrived at my webspace. but before i could access anything a name and password box would appear. i wouldnt be able to access any files until i correctly inputted my name and password.
i know how it works ive done this stuff before.
unless things have changed ???

unless your saying that the name and password have to be inputted in the address. that would make sense why i am not getting anywhere.
Theres something adrift here. if this was difficult there would be more literature on it on the help files.

Well im still not in my ftp file.

says that ftp://ftp.rupertbear.f2s.com/public_html/
should take me to the root of my website. Try it. the link doesnt show the root of my website it just shows an explorer error just like an address that doesnt exist. or is typed incorrectly

Have you tried putting the address in a Windows Explorer window rather than an Internet Explorer window? (i.e. putting the address in from My Computer or My Documents)

I take it you're using IE7, and getting a page that says something like:

"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage - Most likely causes: You are not connected to the Internet, The website is encountering problems or There might be a typing error in the address."

It's probably easier if you either grab a seperate ftp client, such as filezilla, or just create a network location in XP/Vista. If you want, i'll run through the steps to add a location so you can just drag and drop in explorer.

Creating network location in xp sounds good.

so it sounds like an explorer 7 problem.?

Try this for size, in start, run, type the following:

explorer "ftp://rupertbear%40rupertbear.f2s.com@ftp.rupertbear.f2s .com/public_html/"

I can access my website files through that file.
This must be a change in explorer 7.
No mention anywhere in the site information on f2s.
Maybe they expect everybody to use a web client.
I will read up a bit and find out why the changes.
Elrandom3 when you mentioned creating a network location. thats what started me thinking.

The problem is, f2s have changed the way they disallow anonymous logins. Internet Explorer, when you first click into an ftp site, will send the username 'anonymous' to see if it can get any access. I believe before, and most other sites, just ask for a password at this stage, then reject the connection, whereas now f2s simply rejects it as soon as the username is sent, which is perfectly acceptable to do.

It's this that must be the issue in Internet Explorer. With my own server, anonymous logins are rejected after a password, which makes Internet Explorer display a login prompt. Maybe the f2s tech's can look at changing where the anonymous login is rejected, so that IE7 will show a login prompt.

Smile

This is actually a better way of doing things.
i am still puzzled how the file was created automatically ???
Maybe f2s was recieving my attempts at logging in and automatically created the ftp folder in the network locations.
Shame i didnt know about it

Smile this probably explains a few things.

Using Web Folders

Using Web Folders to view and transfer files, folders, and other information to a Web server offers you a more secure computing experience.
Web Folders transfer information over a network connection to a remote Web server, but can use the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol to help protect information as it is being transmitted. (It is not a requirement for Web Folders to use SSL, but it is recommended.) Using SSL with Web Folders requires that the Web server also supports SSL.
Web Folders also support Windows authentication (a method for helping to verify the identity of a user), which can help protect your password when you are logging on to a Web server that also supports Windows authentication
fthis was taken from windows helpfiles using webfolders.

Smile network places folder

That network places folder(ftp.rupertbear.f2s.com) was created yesterday at 17.50 so there must be some automated process of creating this folder once an attempt as been to log on via explorer or the run box.
even with the right address which is now completely logged in my brain . Definetly cannot log on anyway other than that secure folder..
I used to have my ftp folder in favourites now its in network places.

Ah well this is what makes computing interesting.
