Wink Link to external ftp site

Hi
I have an ftp site hosted by xcaliber (good service from them BTW) which I use for my business to distribute customer databases and other software. At the moment I have to give out the ftp site url which is a bit long and I can never remember it!

Can I use the DNS entries in f2s to link ftp.hayne.biz (my domain is hayne.biz) to the external ftp service?

Regards
Neil

yes, you can.

If you have the IP of the Xcaliber service then yes you can create an A Record for ftp.hayne.biz to point to it.

If however, you have a username and password you need to use, this will be made public or do you have an anonymous access area?

Chaz
Thanks for that. Have set up both a CNAME and A record. Tomorrow will tell...
Don't understand your point about the username/password being made public?

Thanks for the prompt response

Proably just a CNAME pointing to the domain name of the FTP server would be best (as it would still work if they changed the IP address of it). According to here having an CNAME and A record is illegal, although I don't know if it will cause problems:

Quote:
Problem? If you have a CNAME entry, make sure that it is the ONLY resource record for that domain. For example, if you have "www.example.com CNAME sparky.example.com", you must not have any A records, MX records, etc. for "www.example.com". [RFC1034 3.6.2] [RFC1912 2.4]
Also apparently ftp.hayne.biz already exists, so you should delete the existing records first or give it a different name.

Edit: Also moved both your threads from webspace to domain names because they are really domain name/DNS management issues, rather than issues with the webspace service.

If you have been provided with a hostname to the ftp server then yes, a cname would work, but if you were only provided with an ip then a cname won't work and an A record is required.

Thanks for your help - ftp.hayne.biz is now pointing correctly to my ftp provider. I solely use the CNAME record - more future-proof!

Thanks
Neil
