DNS Confusion

Hi there,

I've just become an F2S customer and have transfered my domain from my old ISP. I appear to be having some problems sorting my DNS entries out - F2S does things a little different from my last ISP. At the moment I can send email from my inhouse server but I can't receive and I can connect to my webserver by IP but not name. I've made some changes to the DNS entries that will go "live" with tomorrow mornings update.

The details that will be activated tomorrow are below, do they look right, and should I expect my website and email to work properly once the changes are activated and have replicated?

servername.mydomain.co.uk.....A.....195.137.xxx.xx x
mydomain.co.uk................MX....servername.... ....1
mydomain.co.uk................A.....195.137.xxx.xx x
www.mydomain.co.uk............A.....195.137.xxx.xxx

(dots used to preserve spacing)

Thanks in advance,

Q.

From my limited knowledge of DNS they look like they should work.

Try doing a test smtp connection to your server using the facility on http://www.dnsreport.com/.

You can then watch your server log files to see if a connection is being made.

------------------

You could even try it like this:

http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/mail....urdomain.co.uk

Therse are the results when trying with test@freedom2support.net

http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/mail....om2support.net

Getting MX record for freedom2support.net (from local DNS server, may be cached)... Got it!

Host Preference IP(s) [Country]
mail.freedom2support.net. 10 67.15.32.17 [US]

Step 1: Try connecting to the following mailserver:
mail.freedom2support.net. - 67.15.32.17

Step 2: If still unsuccessful, queue the E-mail for later delivery.

Trying to connect to all mailservers:

mail.freedom2support.net. - 67.15.32.17 [Successful connect: Got a good response [250 2.1.5 ... Recipient ok]]

Success!

Thanks Mr Jones, I had a similar idea to yours and used the tools at DNSStuff.com to query my MX records. DNS was apparently expecting my mail server to be called servername.mx.mydomain.co.uk so I created a new MX record for that and it's now working.

Cheers,
