Why aren't MP3s allowed?

Just reading through the T&C, I see that it says mp3s are not permitted. Why is this? I wanted to use the 200MB webspace to host my own music, but this just renders it unusable to me. Even Wanapoo allowed me to host mp3s.

I suppose I could use .OGGs, but that's not the point.

OK, I'm trying to work this out. It says in the FAQ here that:

Quote:
Can I host ZIP or EXE files?
These Files are permitted as long as they are legal files and are not infringing copyright or are used for file sharing.
The f2s T&C says that zips and exe are not permitted. Which is it? Does this mean that I can host MP3s if they're my own files, which I own the copyright to? Anyone else here host MP3s on f2s space?

If it is your own music (created by you) and you own the copyright, I can't foresee any problems

Well, I don't want to use the space just to store files, because like you say, that would be a bit pointless. I, together with a few friends, make music and I want to use the space as a place where people can download and listen to our music. So there are no copyright issues.

Ah, just seen your reply, mike65. Thanks, that's cool. I just thought it was a bit weird that the T&C says mp3s are 'not permitted'. Couldn't think why, other than copyright reasons, which doesn't apply to me.

Hi Mike, just noticed you must have edited your post! Yeah, I'm in south shore. Do you make music? I'm just checking all these little things out before I sign up to f2s!

Blimey, this is fast turning into the 'Fylde Coast thread'!

I use Reason and Ableton Live mainly. I downloaded the free Rebirth last month, it's a fun little program to mess with. Great that Propellerhead decided to start giving it away!

It seems to have nothing to do with copyright, then. This suggests that mp3's are not allowed, whether your own work or not.

I wonder why?

What about wav files, rm files, ogg files, mpg's, etc. ?

Hmmm I don't see the problem. I host music from my friends band for people to download. The copyright is owned by them, and they asked me to host the files. I'll keep on hosting them, if f2s has a problem they can mail me

Im confused - the terms which are linked from the above menu seem to contradict the FAQ on the same menu.

FAQ : "Can I host ZIP or EXE files?
These Files are permitted as long as they are legal files and are not infringing copyright or are used for file sharing. "

TERMS : "g) You agree not to use the Freedom To Surf services to host file repositories, eg the hosting of the following filetypes are not permitted: .mp3 .exe .zip .ra."

Im looking to offer short video clips (nothing dodgy - just some short dance instruction clips - no copyright issues) on my site, I see I am not allowed to offer streaming, so I was going to zip them for people to download - can someone confirm if I am able to or not?

Steve

Hi the_eclectic,

Sorry for not picking up on your post before now (she who must be obeyed spotted it) - chances are you've managed to answer your question by having a play with ReBirth.

IMHO FL is an easier prog to use, but in terms of getting those old Roland sounds ReBirth has the edge.

I tend to use Reason (love this software) as my primary application with FL & ReBirth ReWired into it.

Although I've also started playing around with Sonar with the others ReWired into that.
