on 2Mbit broadband when paying for 8???

Hi there was talking to a friend and found out that trained rate means maximum rate as determined by Tiscali (technical restrictions on that rate aside).

basically im about 13 minutes cycling from the exchange on a 8 Mbit service and getting little over 2Mbit max.

any help on what to do next would be appreciated, im thinking phone them up tell them their speaking rubish when try and fob me off and ask them to set my DS trained rate on their end to what im paying for...which should get me closer to that 8Mbit.

heres my router's stats which is the standard tiscali sends out (SE 587).

Driver Version: 1.75 API Version: GS_API_626 Firmware Version: E.25.41.18 A Dsp Version: 0x000000e1 Status: ON US Trained Rate: 288 kbps DS Trained Rate: 2240 kbps Current US data rate during last 30 sec: 263.577 kbps Current DS data rate during last 30 sec: 175.104 kbps Local Line Attenuation: 44.5 dB Remote Line Attenuation: 25.0 dB Local SNR Margin: 11.0 dB Remote SNR Margin: 15.0 dB Operation Progress: 0x000000ad
cheers

Hi,

Your Downstream Margin at 11dB suggests you could get maybe 3mbit but not much higher if at all possible.

Your attenuation is nice and low though, try plugging your router directly into the test socket located behind the master socket and paste your stats again.

Re: on 2Mbit broadband when paying for 8???

Hi,

I have been on an 8mb service for a couple of years, but the line speed rarely exceeds 2.8mb. I live around 3.5 miles from the Basingstoke exchange, which I believe is still copper with no plan to go fibre. Would switching to a fibre provider, e.g Virgin increase the line speed? That said I have found the f2s service pretty reliable, even after the Tiscali takeover.

Virgin would increase your chances of a higher line speed yes. Stability is questionable though, as I'm on their service and it's not great.

Re: on 2Mbit broadband when paying for 8???

Thanks for the advice. I think I will stay with F2S for now as it gives me a good service for what I need. I just need to save up for a better PC (8years old, 556mhz Celeron, 320mb ram, 40GHz HDD)
