Routing Issues

Hi All,

Im a web designer and i use a vps server from future hosting. I use tiscali broadband from my office!

I have several websites running from the server.

Over the last 4 days I have been having a problem routing to several of my sites.

basically what happens each time is:

If i type Welcome-Sedo.co.uk the site loads up no problem however if i type Welcome-Sedo.co.uk then an advertholdingpage loads instead.

this problem always corrects itself after a few hours.

Of the six domains I have this has happened to 3 at some point over the last 4 days.

only ever to one at a time.

I have done a tracert when i have this problem and it appears to think that it should be aiming for the wrong ip address when this problem occurs.

the server ip is: 78.129.178.172 and when i trace Welcome-Sedo.co.uk it shows that IP

however when i have this problem and I trace Welcome-Sedo.co.uk it shows 69.64.155.21 as the destination IP and it hops around new york and san jose and then stops.

When this problem occurs everybody else can still access the website normally it just happens on any PC or laptop connected to our router.

Has anybody any ideas how to fix this problem.

Stuart

Re: Routing Issues

The software we use, rewrites domains, for SEO purposes. If you wish to use the domain url instead of the rewritten ones, you would need to put it in the code box, by using this icon.

All of the links you have put, work fine for me, however I am on o2

Re: Routing Issues

You really need to report this to Tiscali tech support and ask them to have a look for you as there is something going on (may be a stuck record)....

When you query the Tiscali servers, they show two a records, one for thamin.co.uk and a different one for www.thamin.co.uk

Quote:
; <<>> DiG 9.2.4 <<>> a www.thamin.co.uk
;; global options: printcmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 44651
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0
;; QUESTION SECTION:
;www.thamin.co.uk . IN A
;; ANSWER SECTION:
www.thamin.co.uk . 3488 IN A 69.64.155.21
;; Query time: 3 msec
;; SERVER: 212.139.132.41#53(212.139.132.41)
;; WHEN: Mon Feb 8 17:37:23 2010
;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 50

; <<>> DiG 9.2.4 <<>> a thamin.co.uk
;; global options: printcmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 11480

;; WHEN: Mon Feb 8 17:37:13 2010

If you query the Open DNS servers then you get:

Quote:
; <<>> DiG 9.3.6-P1-RedHat-9.3.6-4.P1.el5 <<>> www.thamin.co.uk
;; global options: printcmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 37784
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 2, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0

;; QUESTION SECTION:
;www.thamin.co.uk . IN A

;; ANSWER SECTION:
www.thamin.co.uk. 14400 IN CNAME thamin.co.uk.
thamin.co.uk. 14381 IN A 78.129.178.172
I guess that the second result matches the settings in the DNS records for your domain?

Re: Routing Issues

I don't think this is a Tiscali issue. I think the problem is with the authoritative DNS servers for the domain.

You've got the authoritative DNS servers for thamin.co.uk set to ns1.clan-system.com and ns2.clan-system.com, but the clan-system.com domain name hasn't been renewed (as you can see if you visit the site). Because it hasn't been renewed, the registrar for clan-system.com has taken over the DNS for the domain so any address under the domain points to their domain expired page, and this includes the two authoritative DNS servers for thamin.co.uk. So when Tiscali's recursive DNS server tries to resolve thamin.co.uk, it can end up going to the wrong place for ns1.clan-system.com and ns2.clan-system.com and getting the wrong answer.

I think the reason you don't always get the wrong answer (and the website sometimes works) is because the DNS servers for .com domains (the *.GTLD-SERVERS.NET servers which hold nameserver details for all .com domains) have glue records for ns1.clan-system.com and ns2.clan-system.com which are correct, so I guess sometimes ISP recursive DNS servers use the glue record and get the correct address (but that's just a guess).

To fix it you'll need to get in contact with whoever owns clan-system.com and renew it. I think once the DNS for clan-system.com is working again, things should go back to normal. Of course my theory could be completely wrong, but that's my guess as to what's happened.

I must admit I didnt think about checking the domain status for CLAN-SYSTEM.COM

Indeed this is likely to be the problem as the domain expired on 22-Jan-2010...
