Your browser is probably loading a cached version of the image rather than downloading it from the net, which is obviously a lot faster!

Slow Speeds can be caused by P2P software such as kazza or Emule, as they use lots of the upstream bandwidth, and the requests for web pages, etc are queued behind the outgoing P2P traffic.

Also we know that many virus are designed to send spam, if a pc has one
of these virus, then the upstream bandwidth will also be constricted,
causing a slowdown.

If you have a network of PCs it only needs to have one PC with either of these running to cause a problem with them all.

MTU and RWIN settings determine how much data can be sent in the data
packets. It's best to maximize the data sent with as little overhead as
possible. We think that an Rwin of 64000 and an MTU of 1420 seems to
work best.

You should run the tweak tester at http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks and
it will give the
current RWIN and MTU settings for your PC, and guide you to using a
program called DrTcp and you can change those settings with it.

These are the main causes with speeds that we have.
Other possible causes could be long extention cables, not all phone
sockets having filters.

If you can ping out to a site and get packets not being returned, then
it's possibly a problem on the BT line. But this is not very common

Reliable on line speedtests:-

http://www.adslguide.org.uk/
http://specials.zdnet.co.uk/misc/band-test/

As a final test, before passing to BT we need you to disconnect from the internet and then log in with the following username: speedtest@speedtest_domain (instead of your f2s login). Use your f2spassword for the password. This will log you onto the BT network, you will then need to go to the following page:www.speedtester.bt.com Run the speed tester and record the result. Do this 3 times throughout the day and then call back or mail me the results. Once you have finished each speed test, you can log back into f2s and use your connection as normal.
