Tiscali murder? Techie Detectives please!

Greetings folks!

Forgive the attention-grabbing title but it was designed to get all you internet detectives reading this post.

Something very strange has hapened to me!

I migrated over to ADSL24 and was activated on Wednesday. Absolutely no problem with the switch and all Internet surfing and e-mails have been fine.

BUT ... for some very strange reason, all Tiscali services are dead! Murdered!

First of all, I cannot download e-mails from the two tiscali accounts I have. No! That is not because of the migration to ADSL24. I've had these accounts for years (they are free accounts which can be set up by anybody) and they have all worked perfectly when I was with various different ISP's - including Worldonline (remember them?) - Fast24 - F2S. I've tried downloading them using OE and Mailwasher. No go.

Perhaps the reason for that is because I cannot even get the Tiscali homepage to load up in my browser. I can get to tiscali.com fine ... but not tiscali.co.uk. That means I cannot even visit their site to do the mails there on their webmail. I've tried to get the homepage using both IE and Firefox. Nothing.

BUT ... I used an anonymous browsing service (anonymouse.org) and then I could bring up the tiscali.co.uk homepage!!!!

Now, I don't have any techinical expertise, but as anonymouse.org got to the tiscali homepage using a different IP address, the only thing I can think of is that somehow, in some way, Tiscali have "murdered" my ADSL24 IP address and are blocking it.

I've cleared my cache scores of times, I have got nothing listed in the IE blocked websites setting etc. etc.

And since when have I not been able to load up the Tiscali page???

Yes ... you guessed it! Since my switch to ADSL24 and I got a new (static) IP. I can surf to any other web page in the world ... but all of a sudden not Tiscali !!!

Detectives ... what's the score? How do we solve this mystery ???

Thanks folks.

Moved to General Chat as its not about the Broadband provision of f2s.

I'd first suggest asking your own ISP for information as it sounds like a block on either one side or the other and by eliminating your ISP they can take it up further with Tiscali if required.

Failing that, it might be worth entertaining what you resolve www.tiscali.co.uk as incase you have some stale DNS records. Try http://212.74.99.30 does this work?

If you can't reach the Tiscali website then you might not be able to reach thier email server either to collect email. It could perhaps be a routing problem with ADSL24/Entanet. I think the first thing to do would be to ask some other ADSL24 users (perhaps on their forum) if they can reach the Tiscali website or collect Tiscali email as well. If they can't either then it's probably something ADSL24 might want to look into.

Greetings Chaz and aos101

Thanks for your replies.

Nope! Using the address (212.74.99.30) also didn't work.

As I admitted above, I'm no techie expert but I went to a site called Central Ops ( http://centralops.net/co/ ) where one can enter a domain (tiscali.co.uk) and do varius tests. I did a traceroute test and something else - a ping test???

Anyway, point is that both of them failed so more and more I'm thinking it has to be either my own static IP adddress is somehow blocked in getting the Tiscali site, or that ADSL24 are somehow blocking access to Tiscali.

I'll certainly do what you both suggest - first I'll post on their forum to see if any other member is having problems, and I'll send a PM to James over there and ask him to look into this.

Thank you both for your helpful sugestions.

Best wishes,

Dr. Mac

Greetings again.

Problem SOLVED!

I surfed to the ukfsn website and was reading their page about conection problems etc. They said that the main reason for not being able to get to certain webpages was ... the MTU setting!

I've never, ever heard that one before!

ADSL24 advise an MTU of 1400, which is what I set my router to. Anyway, after reading the ukfsn info, I changed it back to what I had always had it set to - 1500.

Bingo! Ticali page loads in a flash and all tiscali e-mails now download perfectly in both Mailwasher and OE.

So it looks as though Tiscali need a MTU of 1500 to reach! (Well, at least not 1400)

So there you go then folks. Another interesting thing I've learned about this oh! so wonderful world of ADSL and the Internet.

Best wishes,

Dr. Mac
