Stupid spammers
Just got a spam email which I thought was rather strange (courtesy of a compromised Sky broadband customers PC). It has an attachment called post.zip and no other text, so I try opening it but I get an error. That's because it's actually a RAR file with a .zip extension, so I had to rename it to post.rar to even open it. When opened it contains the usual stock spam and a load of other random stuff to confuse the filters.
Now I know spammers are doing their best now to try to stop scanning systems from reading the spam and identifying it as spam by putting it in PDFs etc, but this is getting a little silly when you have to go to all that effort to read it. Unless they are relying on the user having ZIP software which can recognise the .zip file is actually a RAR file, I really can't see how this tactic helps the spammers

Oh dear more calls to my desk
I got an email with an attachement I cant open.... Im fed up of the calls of: "Is the Spam Filter working as im getting lots of Spam Emails with PDFs of Viagra on them" This is my usual lines: Me - Does it say Spam Score ???% in the subject, them - End User - Yes Me -well its End User - Well its not working well enough Me - Well if i make set it any lower (based on the average score last week of 8% for afforementioend PDF Viagra emails) then we wouldnt get any external emails, end of as all mail is 8% if external. GRRR some people, and then when I say I had over 100,000 items in my inbox to deal with they are like oh what are they, and I say its all your excess Spam and bounces etc (Its the Postmaster box) they still moan that they have too many spam with 3 or 4 in there inbox.

Since it was a zip I wasn't sure if it contained spam or a virus, so opened it to check. The subject was just "post" and the message was empty, so you couldn't really tell what it was without opening it.

Mmmm. I could tell what it was even if my A/V software did not already flag it up as iffy. Are you saying your A/V missed it?

I save spam but I do actually have a good reason for that. It's not just idle curiosity and no, I don't actually read the stuff

![]() I've got antivirus installed under XP, but it wouldn't have picked this up as it was just a RAR'd text file with a wrong file extension (well I don't see why it should flag it).
