Windows VPN ...

Howdy,

I'm looking for a Windows VPN server that won't break the bank. - Yes windows, I know, don't hit me.

I was using OpenVPN on linux but it got a bit tricky and started to irritate me.

I'd like the flexibility of having a linux client but its not overly important, I'll be happy with windows client, to windows server.

Any ideas/takers?

Thanks muchly

Server 2003 has it all pre-built in and just needs setting up, if your thinking just for a few people its fine. I use it on a SBS 2003 box for staff to VPN in from home and it works fine and never goes wrong except when the ISDN goes down.

I've enabled it on my web 2003 box and shall try from home later.

Cheers.

What exactly are you wanting with it chaz? If you personally just want RA on it, why not try logmein.com? I use the free account on that for a couple of servers and its great and easier than VPN for the odd thing for me only.

Yeah, we currently use logmein, but to be honest. I'm more interested in obtaining local access to the network. IE, so my local shortcuts work to shares, and locally obtained dns names etc will play ball.

That and I'm nosy

Heh, some services we run only allow local subnet access so this will help deal with that without having some dodgy wan to lan translation etc.

The next step will be making my linux box at home communicate with it, or god only knows, I'll need to only use my laptop.

John,

Cheers for the heads up on the built in windows VPN. - It works pretty darn well.

Next mission is making linux play with it.

eeeew Linux (beats up Chaz for even thinking about mixing Linux and the glorious wonderful Windows )

Glad you like it Chaz, its perfect for a SOHO setup, but if you were thinking of 10000's of users connecting in I would probably go for some posh Cisco solution thingy, but I have used it in a few places for SOHO and its great and does the job well.

Seems to be alright .. just ran SIMS.net over it.

We have a Cisco 2600 Series Router but I need to look into making it play vpn and what would be required to facilitate this. - Oh, and beat the crap out of the provider to make it happen
