I am buying a new router, I like this one: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=87422 however I'm not sure if it will work with ordinary ADSL. Will it work?

thanks

Well the blurb says:

"Belkin networking offers this one-box solution that lets you share your ADSL Internet connection, files, and peripherals, without cables. It combines two essential networking functions in one innovative product-an ADSL Modem with a 4-port Wireless Router. Operating at wireless speeds up to 125Mbps, the ADSL Modem with Wireless-G Router operates on the 802.11g wireless Ethernet standard."

and so would appear to indicate, yes. If you still don't believe them, phone them up because the product is strangely lacking from the Belkin website.

the manual on the belkin site says it does however the reviews on ebuyer don't exactly glow (except for the first one which is prob ebuyer or belkin themselves ..........but then they are opinions

And getting Ebuyer to post awful reviews is an achievement all by itself. I reviewed the same product (a USB flash drive) 4 times and they never posted it. I was careful to be constructive, supported my comments with specific evidence (i.e. the results of tests I'd run on the drive) and not one review made it onto the site.

On the same day as my first poor review of that product I reviewed six other items I had bought, all with recommendations - all the others were posted within hours of me sending them. The Ebuyer review pages therefore, to me, have zero credibility because they'll almost never post a bad review - presumably on the basis that it harms sales.

See Broadband Buyer for a site not afraid to post damning reviews! The original version of the Linksys WAG54G hardly got a single star in its first 50 reviews with one after another reviewer laying into it. In the end the product was pulled off and replaced by a newer version whereby the reviews have began again.

Netgear DG834(G|GT)? Newest versions ship with ADSL2+ firmware installed, older versions can be upgraded (just upgraded my 1.5-yr old one to support ADSL2+), meaning you can nab a second hand one and upgrade it.

The DG824M so far hasn't had any upgrades for 2 years, meaning I can't upgrade it to ADSL2.

That one looks good, but we need a minimun of 100MBPS for playing dvds from the media server. Or do you think 56mbps is good enough to stream dvds?

DVDs should stream ok over 56mbps, typical dvd framerate gets up to 6mbps, taking away the standard loss of speed due to packet overhead and the substantial drop due to wireless networking being as varied as it is, you should still manage to get that. Of course, it still depends on strength of signal, wall thickness e.t.c.

Never tried streaming DVDs or anything over wireless.

Bear in mind that any wireless thing claiming above 56mbps (i.e. the "g" standard) is slightly dubious due to incompatibilities with hardware - if you do go for it, make sure all of your other wireless hardware is the same brand.
