MySQL on Windows XP?

Anyone able to get it to work, cos I sure as hell can't!

I reformatted a couple of weeks ago from my Windows 2003 system as the trial expired, and I installed apache, php etc pretty much as soon as I got all the drivers for my hardware installed so I could get down to work on freedom2support, got a lot of stuff done and just installed mysql tonight (Dunno why I haven't done it before now)

Used the installer that comes with it, but no matter how hard I try I just cannot seem to get mysql to start at all, the winmysqladmin tool is always showing a red light in the bottom right of the taskbar, and when I select start service it still remains on red, I also have tried runing mysql.exe through the run box in XP but it won't start that way either, nothing happens.

If I try to connect to mysql with phpmyadmin locally I just get a stupid cannot connect to mysql server on localhost 3306 error, or with scripts I get the MySQL Server has gone away error, which suggests to me it hasn't started.

I've tried restarting, a few different configs on install, uninstalled and installed about a dozen times in attempt to get it to work, trying different directories, you name it, I've done it, but I just cannot get it to start, does anyone have any help whatsoever? If you did, I'd be most grateful!

Seen that, only thing is I wanna work with roughly the same config as the new dual xeon server has which I have setup currentley, but have no mysql.

Anyway, what I'll do is try that on a new user account on Windows XP and see where I get,

Installed MySQL 4, after uninstalling every trace of 3.23.58, it works (Wayhey!).

Though now it says 3.23.58 is installed, as when I login to phpmyadmin:
MySQL 3.23.58-max-nt running on localhost as freedom2support@localhost

Answers on a postcard, As I have no idea!
