Margate Air Show and hot weather

Curiously the weather is having no effect on me at all. Driving home from work the car reckoned it was 28C. A few times my finger reached towards the air conditioning button but each time I stopped it and decided to just enjoy the air flow unchilled. In fact a couple of times I gave that little shiver indicating I was not that warm.

I am well known for liking the heat, but not used to actually shivering when its 28C. I'm going to a big airshow in Margate this weekend so I'm hoping the weather holds.

Btw, I've been logged into the chat room all evening and not one single other person has logged in at all. Miserable bunch!

I might be going to that - looks like it will be good. I've heard quite a few jets and other planes flying about Thanet today presumably practicing and generally being very noisy (could hear the rumbles quite well from my house). According to the BBC the weather should be good, but a bit cooler which I'd prefer - a bit too sticky today.

Edit:

Did you go? Even if you didn't you'd have heard that Tornado on full burn all the way round the Kent coast. And if you did - did you go on that giant whirling thing in the middle? Scarey stuff!

As for the weather - it has to be said there was nowhere to hide from the sun. The Mrs managed to get burned through her top!

I noticed you'd been, but not until after you'd left. Unfortunately the program makes no sound when someone else joins (or leaves) so I had nothing to alert me to your presence.

In the end I didn't go to the air show at Margate, but went to Manston to watch some of the planes taking off. I saw the Spitfires take off (and they did a little fly past for us) and the Lancaster and the Red Arrows. Also I could see the Red Arrows doing some of their display from my bedroom window, and I saw them doing the heart in the sky (and other things) on Saturday and Sunday. Also saw the parachutests being dropped off and the Lancaster flew over our house (and that was noisy). Overall very good, but I think because the sun was so strong there will be a lot of people waking up today who went and now have sunburn (my brother was one of them and his face is now very red!).

Completely off topic but what the hey...

The sun was very strong and Palm Bay does not possess a single tree (much less palms), it would seem. I thought I was going to get that nice panda effect and have a white stripe around my face where my shades were but the Factor 30 layed on every other piece of face put paid to that! I also managed to make my face artificially white by going on that whirling hell machine they'd set up.

The St John's Ambulance people were constantly reporting sun stroke / dehydration problems - but when you've been hiking in the central Australian desert as we have you're a bit more aware of these things than the average pommie and it didn't affect us.

The displays were excellent. I should get the pics back on Friday and I'll post some on my website for people to download if interested. There were a couple of blokes in some Russian single engine props that stole the show for me.

Thought I'd split this out from this thread because its not really related to some one wanting to upgrade.

One of the reasons we didn't go was because there is no shade there and it was just so hot. Yeah I'd like to see some of the pictures you've taken. I would have taken some myself at Manston but my digital camera doesn't have a zoom lens so you wouldn't be able to see that much.

Had a dalliance with a girl who worked for the CAA/NATS many years ago, and used to go to Farnborough SBAC.

Extremely noisy.

And the planes were quite loud as well

I have a 300mm hyperzoom lense on my SLR so no problems there! That's why the digital stayed at home - it's a nice camera but shooting high speed aerobatic displays requires a real camera!

The upside of the heat were varying amounts of scantily clad totty, the downside was that not all of what was scantily clad could be called totty.

I take it you couldn't get too close to most of the aircraft then? BBC South East had pictures of all the aircraft nicely turned out with ladders up to the ****pit and that Caddy Lee-Hujamaflip doing the weather and going on about how dad was a Jaguar pilot or something. But when I got to Palm Bay it became clear the only thing landing there was helicopters. I guess Caddy & co must have been at Manston - which is where the airshow used to be in the old days anyway. I guess now it's a commercial airport that's the end of that. Mind you Palm Bay is a near perfect venue for an airshow.

Um, with the hyperzoom fully zoomed the lense is nearly 1ft long! It also gives a sharp "beep beep" when it focuses and the obligatory SLR "clunk" when it fires - not the most subtle tool for candid photography. Besides, I think the folk at Boots would get me arrested when they're developing the films!

I'm afraid the totty will just have to remain a happy memory! <- me on Sunday

Sorry Mick!
