Hi folks
I have a couple of modems, a USB Alcatel Speedtouch, and a Toshiba WBG-1200A ADSL modem/wireless/router. The former works very well indeed but now that I have tested that, I would much rather get my router up and running. Using the standard windows DUN, the USB modem is set to obtain an IP and a DNS server address automatically, and gives me my static IP plus an automatically allocated F2S DNS server. This then gives me a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255. However I have plugged in my Tosh router and don't seem to be having much luck, although it worked with my previous ISP fine. I plug it in, and via the web panel set it to PPPoA mode, set up VPI=0 and VCI=38, copy/paste in the username/pwd. It doesn't seem to matter whether I put in my IP or use the dynamic IP setting, it just doesn't seem to connect. Similarly turning the DNS relay feature on the router on or off makes no difference either. However it does detect the ADSL signal (576 Kbps, 288 Kbps) and I can also ping my F2S static IP (even though I am not connected) but I can't ping the DNS server IP. My suspicion is that the subnet address of 255.255.255.0 appears to be hardwired into my router, and I think this needs to be 255.255.255.255. I don't suppose it matters -- given that my other modem works fine -- but my true activation date is in fact tomorrow. Any thoughts anyone? Cheers muchly ![]() Squiggle |

what subset mask are you using on your windows pc's. I use 255.255.255.0 with no problems, just ensure its set all round the same.
Just a thought you have saved the details to router as some only work after settings have been saved. I would try doing a factory default reset on the router and then re-enter details, just to make sure you have errasied all old isp's settings. Another thought are you migrating from one isp to f2s? could be that your still using your old isp, which would explain why it wont connect... but you have a adsl signal. Phew 2 thoughts before 07:00 that me done in for the day....

Hi John,
Dear me, a 6:52am post; whilst the rest of us sleep! Thanks for the ideas, I shall try that. I will be pleased if the 255.255.255.0 works as this appears to be hardwired in my router. I bought it when 11g wireless was still fairly current and hence went for one of the cheaper ones! The subnet mask I am using on my windows PCs -- not sure here-- think they are all auto-detected. It shouldn't make any difference anyway as I am using the web interface directly into the router to see if it is connecting. Once the router modem connects OK then I am fairly sure it will all work. Of course the problem is that the interface doesn't tell you why it is not connecting -- something you get as standard when using the Windows DUN! Nope, I'm not migrating, I am new to F2S as a brand new customer on a recently re-enabled BT line. Anyway can connect to F2S via my USB modem, which is why this situation is a bit strange. Anyway a factory reset is a very good idea, hadn't thought of that, will do that tonight. Will let you know how I get on. Squiggle PS: Worked out that I wasn't actually pinging my F2S static IP. In fact, since the router allocated that IP to itself, which of course would be a 'real' IP on the internet if it had correctly connected, in fact my windows box was just pinging the router, and probably wasn't going out to the internet at all. |

Tried all the above, folks, and am running out of ideas. Have reset the router, tried a number of modes switches, set up the config as specified in my welcome e-mail... all to no avail
![]() I am managing to exchange ADSL data with the F2S server, since my control panel indicates that this is the case (though not sure if this can be trusted! ). Could I trouble anyone to have a look at these screens to see what I might have missed?Muchos gracias for any further suggestions Squiggle |

The router automatically gets its IP, netmask (also 255.255.255.0), DNS & default route from the adsl connection. Check what you have in the router's routing info tab. |

Cheers BroomFondle (everyone has to have a hobby
) I'm afraid the Routing info screen is something to do with NAT, nothing to do with the modem at all. I use a mix of static and dynamic IPs for the machines on my network and that works fine... it's just getting this darn modem to work! I notice that the data "amount" screen shows ADSL data exchange regardless of whether the password is correct. I guess therefore this shows that the ADSL signal is live (well it should be, it works on another modem!) but doesn't show whether the user/pass are correct or not. Btw I've switched to dynamic IP in the hope that F2S servers will allocate me my IP, in case that makes it more likely to work (!). Dynamic IP and DNS allocation seems to work with Windows DUN and the USB modem anyway. To F2S support: are you able to tell why a connection is failing by watching your connection thingy at the F2S end? If so I'll give you a shout on one of your support days and attempt a few connections while we speak. Otherwise, to anyone, if other ideas can be bounced around I'd appreciate it. Think I've covered all the bases an' it stil don't work Cheers all ![]() Squiggle |

Similar Problem
I've just tried configuring a WBG-1200A for use with BTclick business broadband. Everything OK, except that DNS server information isn't being picked up and made available to client PCs. I now need to hardcode a pair of DNS servers on each PC's TCP/IP configuration - what a pain!
Any ideas? |

Have you enabled "DNS relay" in the router's web-based Simple Configuration screen? You will also need to find out the IP address of BT Click's DNS server and put that in the "DNS Server IP Address" field.
Let us know how you get on ![]() Squiggle |

Wbg-1200a Dns
Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I've got to the stage where I have a single BTClick DNS server defined in the modem/router config and the client PCs can now be left as TCP/IP dynamic everything. Enabling DNS Relay isn't necessary, although I believe this allows the Toshiba to cache DNS information and only refer back to the ISP when necessary. I'm still annoyed however that I have to set a BTclick DNS at all. Their service comes with a pair of primary DNS servers and another backup pair and I'd much rather let the device pick-up the active IP ones dynamically. This will save reconfiguring every time BTClick switched DNS servers for whatever reason. Does anyone have the user guide for the WBG-1200A? I have the quick-ref only. Also, is there a firmware upgrade from 1.27.13 ? |
