X-APOP authentication causes E-mail failure

I seem to be having intermittent problems receiving emails. I am using OS X 10.5.6 and Apple's Mail program.
The error message I get is
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account or try again.

The server error encountered was: The POP server inmail.xxxx.f2s.com doesn't support X-APOP authentication. Please check your account settings and try again.

If I leave it several hours without changing any settings it will suddenly receive all the outstanding emails. My wife's account is working perfectly on her computer.

The emails show up in webmail via Safari. I can always send e mails.

This has been happening for several days.

I have tried to contact f2s technical support several times but they haven't replied.

Much earlier in this discussion another Mac user posted very helpful information about how to fix this error...

The on off on off mail of recent times must hit a default on the mail program preferences - account - password switching from password to APOP (related to F2S as googlemail also on mail program is unaffected) once reset to password everything is A ok.
