Webmail is back, but ...

Webmail is back this morning (ie. I can login and get an empty inbox) but is still broken (ie. I send myself a test and it never appears in the webmail inbox nor can it be POP downloaded - unless it's sitting in a massive queue?). Also, all my online folders are empty which I'm assuming will return when webmail is fixed ...

There is one bonus, forwarding rules were still working during the outage so all my inbound email is stored elsewhere (google) ...

Re: Webmail is back, but ...

doh! i wasn't paying attention! i was popping another (similar) address and not (as i thought) my F2S address. So yes, I'm in the same boat as lots of others who can't pop from F2S.

Someone in this forum (Chaz I think) suggested using a dedicated email hosting service for reliable email - I'll second that. Or for free simply use google.

Has anyone had any contact with Tiscali/F2S about this outage ?

The Google offering is fantastic, I use it for 3 domains now.

Re: Webmail is back, but ...

Something is still wrong with f2s email, certainly. One of my email accounts cannot be accessed via POP3 (wrong user/password). All the others seem to be working.

I don't get these sort of problems any more with Plus.Net (about 6 months with them now, after 5, increasingly painful years with f2s).

Re: Webmail is back, but ...

Is it easy to switch to another provider. I confess, I only think this way when something goes wrong?

Is this the same error message everyone else is getting. I use Outlook.

"Sending and receiving reported error (0x800CCC92); ‘Your e-mail server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password in your account properties. Under Tools, click E-mail accounts.. The server responded ?ERR [SYS/PERM] Unable to open maildrop; System I/O error’

Anna,

I'm more than happy to help you get set up over on Google if you want to PM me we can look into it.

It'll cost you no more than a tenner for 2 years and we can do it fairly instantly (well, within a few hours).

Re: Webmail is back, but ...

Sorry, but I see no reason why anyone should use F2S Email right now, there was only ever one good email platform in the history of F2S. The one Chris and Nick Panayis designed from the early days until Pipex dismantled it in early 2006.

That email system was the most speedy and reliable I've ever used. The current, and the many ones tried since the Pipex takeover and Tiscali one have been crap.

Re: Webmail is back, but ...

As you can see, I've been here since 2003. I have to agree with Justin, this is why I still use Outlook with my f2s.email add, the one everyone has.

These days it's crap.

I have become so used to using Outlook for my emails, and I like Outlook, been using it for years. I have so many folders there. I also have a yahoo email address and I can honestly say I've never had a problem with that. Maybe I should just give everyone who matters that email add in future until I make a decision.

Seems all that works in the F2S email department right now is SMTP ...

now showing on F2S status page as being down. Not had a reply to the last 3 tickets I've raised in the past few weeks, looks like nobody at F2S gives a toss anymore.

Re: Webmail is back, but ...

Anna,
If you are thinking about giving a new e-mail addy to contacts, it is worth using one of the e-mail forwarding services.
I bought a .uk.com domain from freeparking (there are many others) and each time I change ISP, I just redirect to the new one. I too use Outlook but whilst these mail server ailments are going on, I can also redirect to hotmail/wherever as a temp measure.
It only costs something like £5/yr and will redirect 10 addresses (from memory) so you can do the whole family.
There are other domains available - .me.uk - .name.uk etc.... and you end up with an e-mail address like john@smith.uk.com

Re: Webmail is back, but ...

Thank you Reg and also Chaz, for the advice.

I am a writer of non fiction, therefore everyone who has my email add. are contacts, some of whom are very important, and most professionals. I only have two family members who ever contact me by email - they hate computers - me too now because I've had enough of this, and it's costing me £22.99 a month.

If it wasn't for the hastle involved I would have changed a long time ago believe me - this is just too much for me.

I will have a look at what you have both advised me to do. There are some things out there I have never heard of, such as the mail forwarding service - I take it this means anyone who uses my old f2s email add will have it forwarded to the new one Regh - is that right?

Re: Webmail is back, but ...

Anna,

Afraid not, any mail sent to your F2S address is at the mercy of F2S. This would work by forwarding mail BEFORE it gets to F2S.

You just mentioned changing ISP and therefore you will in all probability have to give all your contacts a new e-mail address. Use that as an opportunity to uncouple your e-mail address from your ISP by getting a new e-mail address from somewhere like freeparking who simply forward e-mail to wherever you request (F2S when it is working hotmail or wherever otherwise). Also, in the (hopefully unlikely) event of moving ISP again, you simply forward from there again.

For example, I use freeparking to have my surname in there so the e-mail address I give out is reg@<surname>.uk.com and it is forwarded to F2S (but not much longer as I am going too).
You are in fact getting a (sub)domain name from freeparking and as a bonus, you can also setup a WEB site using it www.<surname>.uk.com or whatever name you choose. It will still need to be hosted somewhere but again, most ISPs provide some web space and again, you can forward when you move ISP.
