Returned Hotmail emails

Has anyone else had a problem recently with mails to hotmail accounts being returned as "undelivered mail" from Postfix with the error message "550 Command rejected for policy reasons". This seems to have been an intermittent problem - OK 1 week & bounced the next.
I raised a ticket regarding it & got a reply on 29/11/06 -
"We have been experiencing problems with customers trying to send emails to a hotmail.com address and any yahoo.co.uk and yahoo.com addresses, this problem lies with hotmail and yahoo. I would advise getting in contact with them in regards to this issue."
I replied suggesting that f2s should do the contacting but had no direct reply. Another answer from tech support appeared on 13/12/06 seemingly unaware of the 1st reply -
"This issue doesn't seem to be affecting all our customers only a small
minority which would indicate and IP address block blacklisting is in place by
hotmail, hopefully this issue will be resolved in the near future but
unfortunatley i am unable to give you an actuall time frame as to when this
wil be resolved
."
I have just had another hotmail email returned (but one went OK last week) & would like to know what the real score is
thanks
Tony

Tony,

I'm assuming you are using postfix to fire off your emails directly thus using your own IP which is probably listed in SORBS due to f2s' sorbs miscommunications.

Configure postfix to smarthost to outmail.f2s.com and it will work fine. Does for me anyway and i'm listed on sorbs.

Chaz
Thanks for this although it went way over my head! I am using f2s webmail only & I cant understand why sometimes emails to hotmail accounts go through & then dont. I wouldnt think that I would be listed & delisted on a regular basis which is why I have assumed it was down to f2s. Will try sending a test & see what happens

Im surprised no-one commented on getting 2 replies from f2s tech support although tells a slightly different story!

returned Yahoo mails

Hi Chaz will do , have been trying to report it to Yahoo but got stumped on some of the questions they ask on their website, ( now cant find it DOH!! ) but got this in response to a question posed on Yahoo`s "ask a question" fault report thingy ..

I Quote ;

Yahoo has been having major server issues since at LEAST Jan. 10, seemingly just with particular servers. And what's happening to you is unfortunately one of the many problems that people are having because of them, and Yahoo doesn't seem to be in any particular hurry to solve them. And the problems are not just w/Yahoo Beta or IE7; I and others not using either are having similar problems. But both do have more problems; if you're using Beta, it's still in the testing stage and has a lot of problems, so go back to original Yahoo mail, and the same w/IE7, go back to IE6 until MS irons out all the problems.
I've had to use another acct.provided free by my ISP to send/rcv important e-mails since Jan. 10, and it's been working just fine the whole time. If you don't have another acct.w/another provider besides Yahoo, I'd strongly advise to get one; it makes a good backup in case of problems like this.
Please see my posting from Fri. Jan. 12 under the heading "Anyone having problems of any kind w/Yahoo Mail, PLEASE READ THIS" for more info and on reporting problems to Yahoo.
Since that original posting, they've also sent another e-mail that they've escalated the problem (or should I say problems!) to their engineering department, which is an indication of major problems, and not just a minor S/W "glitch." And again, these problems are not exclusive to Yahoo's Beta, but it does seem to compound the existing problems. This would indicate to me that there are also compatibility issues btwn. the H/W and S/W, besides the server problems.
So it's not anything you're doing, your computer, or your internet connection, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. And BTW, deleting temp files (which your computer automatically does anyway every time you shut down your computer), cookies, or history will absolutely NOT fix the problem, nor will running disk cleanup or defrag or a system restore.

This has been OK & now has just returned. Returned mail has some additional "explanation"
Reasons for rejection may be related to content such as obscene language, graphics, or spam-like characteristics (or) other reputation problems.
I plead not guilty to the insinuations!
I have replied (again) to the original ticket I raised in Nov06

Same Problem

Hi,
I'm having the same problem with my Webmail sending to Hotmail accounts.
I've raised a ticket with support stating that as they are the owners of the IP address ranges its their responsibility to have them removed from any blacklists they might appear on and to solve any problems, even if this actually means having to speak to another ISP. I am basically just leasing an IP from their range.

It has been going on pretty much since last April with Hotmail unfortunately, so I would hope that they have contacted them by now!

Don't email any Yahoo addresses so don't know about that.

Hi,

Thank you for your email. We have requested that they remove the server from their blocklist. This request may take a few days for them to action.

Got a reply from support on this
I'm sorry to hear that you are having difficulty in sending mail to hotmail
addresses. This is a problem that we became aware of yesterday. We have raised this to our 3rd line team to get the block removed. At present we dont have an estimated time that this will be resolved but we are working to make this happen as soon as possible. I'm sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Kind Regards

Paul
F2S Tech Support

He says yesterday - I say November 06 when I raised the 1st ticket but at least somebody is doing something

I brought this up with tech support on 7th November, then eventually answered on 28th December and this was their reply

Quote:
Thank you for contacting Technical Support.

We are aware that there is occasionally a problem with blacklisting on this
particular server. This is unfortunately due to certain subscribers who send out many unsolicited e-mails in a short space of time.

While we act quickly to terminate the subscribers who are responsible, by
this time the damage has been done and the server will have been
blacklisted. Thankfully, most spam blacklists have an expiry time and so this
blacklisting soon lapses.

Please be assured we will continue to work quickly against abusers of the
system.

I hope this is helpful, but if you have any further questions, please do not
hesitate to contact us.
