prioritising traffic

So I have set my client to check my 6 f2s email address for new messages every 2 seconds during 8am to 6pm, Those I'd consider "Peek" Hours.

However after awhile I get connection refused messages, say every 1500 connects.

So, My ftp speed is crappy, my p2p speed is crappy, i cant check my email as often as i like.

However I have started downloading the weekly wikipedia dump.

Mmmmmmmmmmm 15gig mysql database over http.

230kb/sec.

Of course I cancel it when i come home from work, only to start it the next day.

Personally I would consider checking for mail every 2 seconds on 6 accounts (possibly all on the same server) excessive. Do you really need to be aware of email within 2 seconds of it arriving? I wouldn't be supprised if you were getting connection refused because you were checking too often and reaching some kind of limit set by the server admin.

Removed unnecessary language from thread title

It could be a critical email.

Do the extra few seconds really matter that much? Blimey. I would have thought checking every minute was slightly excessive.

Anyway, surely an IMAP connection would be better suited than constantly hammering the POP3 server. Just a thought.

I check every ten minutes. My contacts use the phone or SMS for time-critical contact. If I was desperately expecting information or a file then I would be rechecking manually more often.
