DNS problem

I'm having a similar problem to what QCumber had.
At least he got his fixed, I hope I can.
I've been trying for about a week now to set up an email server.
Tried 3 different email servers, reinstalled os, but it's got me beat.

I can send email, but not receive it.
The DNS settings seem to be correct:

mail.mydomain.com...........A.....83.67.xxx.xxx
mydomain.com................MX....mail.mydomain.co m ....5
mydomain.com................A.....83.67.xxx.xxx
www.mydomain.com............A.....83.67.xxx.xxx

Results from DNS reports MX Records are OK but I still can't receive email on the server.
Any help would be gratefully received.

What does the email test here show? Also I'm moving this to the Domain Names forum from Broadband.

Same as always:

HostPreferenceIP(s) [Country]mail.mysite.com.583.67.xxx.xxx [UK]

mail.mysite.com. - 83.67.xxx.xxx [Could not connect: Could not connect to mail server (timed out).]

I assume the IP of your mail server is the same as that you are posting from? I have just tried that test using the reverse DNS entry for your IP and it connected OK but gave an error presumably because I wasn't using your domain as the email address. Are you sure the mail subdomain is pointing to the correct IP address? If you put your mail.mysite.com address in here and do a custom port scan on port 25 does it say it could connect?

Port Scan 83.67.xxx.xxx
Thu, 15 Dec 2005 11:51:38 -0800

The host 83.67.xxx.xxx does not have a service running on port 25 (smtp).

Let's see if you can clear a few things up for me.
I have a WAN IP of 83.67.215.XXX
I've been allocated a block of IP's with the addresses:
83.67.42.xxx to 83.67.42.yyy
is this normal.

I don't know if thats normal with blocks of IPs, but I can connect to the SMTP server running on the WAN IP address you are posting from. Have you setup your MX record for your domain to point to the WAN IP you are posting from (83.67.215.XXX), or to point to an IP in your IP block?

It's pointing to an IP in the block

Thanks for trying to help by the way.

Yes I can connect to the internet on this machine.

Another question for you.

If the block of IP addresses are set up correctly should I be able to Ping them.
I've tried pinging them from an internet site and get timed out.

I was using another Custom DNS service before moving to f2s and had none of these problems, although I was using 192.168.X.X and using the router to point the correct machine.

I thought moving to f2s and getting a block of IP's made sense.
How silly of me

If the machine in the block you are pinging doesn't have a firewall stopping it from responding to pings then it should respond. Are you sure you have the IP block setup right with the top and bottom IP addresses left for network and broadcast addresses etc? If they are setup right you should be able connect to them from the Internet.

They all connect to the internet.
The email server will send but not receive.
This is getting really confusing.

I've just changed one of the settings on the mail server to allow web mail.
I'm going to allow this for about an hour.
Could you see if you can connect it

Nope can't connect to that at all, not by that link or on port 25 and I can't ping it either.

Thanks for your help.
I wonder If I've been given the correct block of IP's, or if they're enabled.
Had enough for tonight.
Going to drown my sorrows.

Good idea. It seems like the DNS is setup right, so it looks like its a problem with the IP block.
